This morning was an early departure. We were on the bus by 7:30. It was really not a big deal to be leaving Zagreb. It’s a nice enough place but there’s very little in the way of very interesting things.
It would take us about three hours to get to Plitvice National Park. Here we were going to see some lakes and waterfalls. The park was completely mobbed. Once we got off the bus and started after the trails, we were in long lines of people moving their way down to the falls. At first we had a view of the falls from the top. It was really quite beautiful. The drop was Quite long. It was not however a great volume of water. We started down to take a look at the falls from the bottom.
As we meander down the path we began to see lakes of a beautiful green. It appears that the bottom of the legs has some type of a white sediment that gives them this aqua green color. The water is so clear that you can see right to the bottom. Fish of all sizes of swimming around and it’s just a beautiful site. When we finally get to the bottom, we can look up and see the waterfall. The site from the bottom shows a larger volume of water then what you could see from the top.
We moved along around the lakes and saw some mini waterfalls in Rapids. It was really a wonderful opportunity. We had hoped that the elevation and the cover of pine trees would relieve us from the heat. It did not. It was tremendously hot. Now that we’ve walked around and observed everything that can be seen from the bottom it’s now time for us to go back to the top. Yes, that means that the trip back is all uphill. I can’t say it was pleasant however, I did make it in a reasonable amount of time. Going uphill is all in the breathing. But I sure was glad to see the top of the hills.
Back on the bus and stopping at a campground for lunch, we were eager to get to our next stop. We were going to spend the next two nights in the town of Opatija. Opatija it’s a coastal city with a beautiful coastline and lovely beaches. We arrived into town a little after six and we met for dinner at 7 o’clock. We had dinner at a beautiful restaurant on the water. Everyone had seafood except for me.I had pork Medallions with vegetables and it was delicious.
After dinner I was pretty tired and it was still very hot. There was no air movement at all. I went back to my room at the hotel. The hotel was a classic old building that been built in the late 1800s. I had a lovely balcony off the side of the building and I was able to watch people walk by on the Main Street. After sitting there for about a half hour 45 minutes I was really exhausted. However I could sleep in in the morning. There was an optional tour to some hill villages. After the experience of Hill Village is the day before I decided that I would stay back and enjoy this beautiful seaside resort. A good choice!
