This morning we were out early and we said goodbye to Opatija. This is the place I hope to see you again. We are on our way to Ljubljana , Slovenia. We got an early start as we were going to stop at the Postojna Caves. We went to the border very quickly although we each had to get out of the bus and go to the window and have a passport stamped.
We arrived at caves at about 9 o’clock. That gave us some free time to walk around although I have to say that wasn’t much to say. We were scheduled to be on the train took you into the caves at 10 AM. The train was really interesting. It had all the frills of the Disney ride end it was a 10 minute ride into the caves. The lighting was very dramatic and they were stalactites and stalagmites and pools of water in the cave. Eventually the train came to an end and we are able to get out of the train and walk.
The temperature in the cave was about 50° and although it was cool at first it was comfortable and it was certainly a relief from the heat outside. We started by walking up this very steep hill he get to the Cave. We had an English-speaking guide who offered some information about the cave. She talked about how it was hundreds of thousands of years old and that a stalactite or a stalagmite lengthened about 1 cm every hundred years. Once we reach the highest point we walked down and began to reach the lowest point. It seemed like we were Just walking in a straight line that we realized at one point that we were actually walking in a spiral. It was a very impressive showing. The infrastructure that they have built inside the caves was phenomenal.
I was at the Carlsbad caverns in New Mexico and the Luray Caverns in Kentucky many years ago. I remember that they were impressive but I don’t remember them being quite this good. Once going through the caverns we got back on the train which again took us through some areas of the caves and finally deposit us at the beginning. The whole process took about an hour and a half. It was really a great take. We had lunch at the hotel there and then began to make our way to Slovenia.
We arrived at our hotel a little after two And we were lucky that our rooms were ready and we were able to relax a little bit before our city tour. We met in the lobby at 3:30 and a local guide Irina showed us around the old town. It really reminded me a lot of Bratislava, Slovakia. Much of the city was built during the time of the Austria- Hungarian empire. The buildings have beautiful decorations and it has been nicely restored. It does have a history from the Romans at one time it was the sitting wall that had been built by the Romans. It was destroyed in an earthquake in the 1700s and that change the face of the whole city. There is a Castle high on top of the Hill which we will see another day.
I read a recommended shops and restaurants and showed us really how easy it is to get around the town even without using a map. I went to one of the restaurants that you recommended for dinner. It was absolutely wonderful. I had pork medallions and a plum sauce with potato dumplings and a tomato salad with pumpkin seed oil and goat cheese. It was a magnificent meal. I like sitting out and eating in these cafés so you can watch people go by. It makes things more interesting. I walked around a little bit after dinner and met several of the people in my group but I found I was ready for bed so here I am in my room finally catching up with all my work.
Tomorrow we’re off to Lake Bled. I’m looking forward to it.
