Day 19 & 20: Zagreb

Overseas Adventure Travel cos the experience of the farm A Day in the Life. This day on the farm was one of the best that I have ever had. The experience was authentic and the people that we met with genuine and showed us an off a lot about the culture and life in a small village. I enjoyed it immensely.

All things must come to an end and we began our trip to Zagreb. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. It is the city that was built by the Austrian Hungarian empire in the late 1800s. The architecture is phenomenal but a lot of work needs to bring these buildings back to their glory days. The amount of graffiti on each of the buildings is horrifying. It’s mostly just bored kids riding their name or  The names of sports teams. It really is too bad because it could be a beautiful city.

There is really not enough alike to see in Zagreb. The cathedral is relatively new but certainly beautiful. There is an exciting vegetable market on the top of the hill near the cathedral. It was busy with locals and I always enjoy it when I consider the café drink a cup of coffee and watch the Locals go about their daily business. We have a local guy whose name was Niven.  He was very good on history and on interesting facts about different buildings. He pointed out some interesting museums such as the museum of broken relationships and another one of pictures that were painted only on glass. As much as he tried, that still was not an off a lot to see in Zagreb. There was a main square that was right near our hotel. It was a bustling place but there was really nothing special about it Other than it was large and it was a gathering place for locals. At night they were different musicians in groups that were performing here. One I enjoyed particularly was a group of young is Israeli Palestinian’s Singing  for peace.  They were pretty entertaining.

Another nice part about Zagreb was across from our hotel was a beautiful park. The park contained a couple of art museums and it had a gazebo for concerts. The last night we were here there was a concert on the gazebo. It was a busy place and mostly locals came in except especially at night . It was a place you could escape the heat and watch Zagreb go by. Our hotel in Zagreb was a very old building that had been refurbished. Although very beautiful it was not terribly comfortable. Most of the women in the group spent many hours shopping as clothing was very fashionable and not terribly expensive. I enjoyed the cafés and the restaurants as you could sit and people watch and people are always rushing by.

The second day we were in Zagreb, we were taken on a tour of two villages, Klanjec and Kumrovec. In the first village we went to see a gallery and workshop of the sculptor, Augustincic. He was a favorite of Tito who lead the country from 1948 until 1980. Much of his work was similar to what we have seen in other communist countries.  I will say, that some of his work is quite engaging. That’s definitely not communist stuff. We were given a tour of the gallery and his workshop. It really wasn’t terribly interesting however there were a couple of pieces of sculpture that I thought were interesting. I will put some of them in the pictures below.

Our next stop was the village in which Tito was born. The village has been taken over as the living Museum. People have vacated the houses and they have been set up to look as if it was the time when Teedie was born in 1890. They were barns with phony corn hanging from the roof.  Even in the house that Tito was born in, there was only two pieces of furniture that were authentic. It was interesting to see how they heated their houses by ceramic stoves and how their kitchens were very small and there were no chimneys. Other than that it really had very little relationship to anything around Tito. He left Neir is a young boy and moved to other places. They say he spent many years in Russia and there’s some question as to whether the Tito that came back and ruled the country was the same person who was born in this village. Supposedly the boy who was born in this village had lost some fingers in an accident when he was working in the blacksmith shop. His real name was Joseph B
