Day 14: From Croatia to Bosnia-Herzegovina

Today was a travel day. We were off at 7:30 in the morning and headed to Sarajevo. We said goodbye to  Dubrovnik and we were able to take one last look as we took the road out. It wasn’t too long before we hit the border. I expected long wait at the border crossings but none of it materialized. For the most part we went right through without a hitch.

As we left the coast and moved inland the land became more hilly and eventually mountainous. The scenery was exquisite and we passed a number of lakes and rivers that made for a beautiful photo ops. About two hours into our trip we stopped a small village called stone and we were able to see a wall that was built In the 1300s that was there to protect the town. The wall is being restored in the town although very small is really quite lovely.

After another hour or so on the road we stopped for lunch. We stopped in a town called Mostar. The fame of Mostar  is the bridge that was destroyed during the 1991 war. The original bridge was built during medieval times. Although the new bridge is built up concrete and really doesn’t give you the feeling of an old Bridge you get the idea. The restaurant we stopped at was quite rustic and the food was excellent. The lunch what is it a veal stew, salad, and fried bread different kinds of cheeses. It was a delicious meal and quite satisfy. We had an hour to continue exploring But frankly it was nothing to explore. Every stall was a tourist trap. There wasn’t anything there but I hadn’t already seen in Dubrovnik or in Istanbul.  Everybody was back at the bus in about 30 minutes and we are able to MoveOn.

As we went along, the scenery continued to be mountainous and rugged. We had some pretty steep inclines to go out and the scenery continued to be just beautiful. Our last stop the afternoon is a small village That had a railroad bridge it was blowing up during World War II. It was blown up by the Bosnians because Hitler was going to try to use it to bring equipment and supplies across the river. The original bridge is no longer there but there is a bridge that was put there by filmmakers who made a film about the  incident.

By 6 o’clock, we were in Sarajevo. I hotel is relatively new and comfortable. It’s located right in the old town and shortly after checking in we headed into the old town for dinner. This time we had some type of meat that you rolled into pita bread and mixed it with cheese and pepper and onion. We started with a vegetable soup and it was all very good. After dinner we walked around the old town but it was very crowded and I found time to just go back to my hotel and relax after a day of travel. Tomorrow morning we start with a guy who is going to give us a walking tour of the city. There are many remnants of the war here and some of the buildings that were bombed have been left as reminders. It’s a very interesting place.
